Maria Antonia Garcia is a Chapel Hill resident, but she was born in Havana, Cuba, where she was a mathematics professor at Havana University for more than 25 years. Just like mathematics, poetry inspires an intrinsic notion of creativity. Her passion for poetry started when her grandmother read her pieces from the Cuban poet Jose Marti, and, at just three years of age, she learned to recite his famous poem “Los zapaticos de rosa” (“The Little Pink Shoes”). To this day, Jose Marti is one of Maria Antonia’s favorite poets. She also enjoys reading Pablo Neruda, Nicolas Guillen, and Gustavo Adolfo Becker, among others. She believes it is very important to educate children from their early years in the passion for poetry. Today she continues to use poetry to inspire children to think creatively while she works at Mi Escuelita Spanish Immersion Preschool.
